What you’ll find
One of Kusatsu's roughly 19 free community bathhouses, rebuilt after the old building's age and earthquake-safety issues, fed by the very hot Bandaiko sulfur source and effectively open around the clock - but restricted to town residents only since COVID, with strict no-talking etiquette enforced by locals.
Indoor baths
1A single tub, described as smaller after the 2025 rebuild (about 3-person capacity) than the old building (about 5-person capacity).stated by 2 visitors · Jul 2024 – Jul 2025

What visitors add
For foreign visitors
Access for non-residents is effectively closed: 4 reviews spanning Jul 2024 - Aug 2026 state people from outside Kusatsu town cannot bathe (COVID-era restriction still in force), while one July 2026 reviewer says outsiders can enter 'conditionally' — and was loudly scolded by an elderly local for talking; that reviewer advises greeting loudly and staying absolutely silent if you do get in.

The bath draws the Bandaiko source: one reviewer says it is therefore very hot and long soaks are unwise (also noting improved ventilation was built for the hydrogen-sulfide water), and another (2024) found the inflow very hot with tap water used to temper the tub; a third reviewer found the tub temperature just right, and a fourth calls the onsen itself superb.
stated by 4 visitors · Jul 2024 – Jul 2026The water
The building was rebuilt after the old bathhouse aged and failed seismic standards: the new tub is one size smaller (about 3 people at distance, per the post-rebuild reviewer; a 2024 reviewer described roughly 5 abreast), and signs ask bathers to avoid talking in the tub for infection and noise reasons — conversation carries to neighboring houses.
