What we answer

The questions a map cannot answer

Will they let me in at all?
20 of 179 baths we cover are for staying guests or local residents only. Google calls all of them "onsen".
Are tattoos a problem?
Reported only when two or more visitors say so; 6 baths so far. Otherwise we print "not known — call ahead", never a guess.
What does it cost, and is it cash only?
Adult admission and payment notes as visitors reported them, with the years they said it.
Is the water real?
Free-flowing from the source (kakenagashi) or recirculated, heated or diluted — the thing Japanese reviewers argue about most.
When is the last entry?
Closing times, last-admission cut-offs and the Tuesday nobody warned you about.
What do I bring?
Towels, soap, locker coins — counted from the people who forgot them.
How we know

We do not guess

Official listings
Name, address, hours and category from Google Business listings, refreshed monthly.
Visitor evidence
Japanese-language reviews read in full, turned into yes / no / unknown facts with the number of mentions and the years they span. The text itself is never republished.
Government statistics
Ministry of the Environment counts per prefecture, so we know how much of the universe we cover.
A quality gate
Every quote is checked against the source; every claim needs two independent visitors before it prints. Tattoo policy on one visitor's word is suppressed.
