The bath

What you’ll find

A tiny, TEPCO-run day-use bath attached to the Oze Nature Center at Tokura, popular with hikers waiting for the bus, with genuine kakenagashi alkaline sulfur spring water and full amenities but a very small tub that fills up fast at peak hiking-season and bus-arrival times.

The water
Two reviewers transcribe the posted analysis: alkaline simple sulfur spring (hypotonic, alkaline, high-temperature), pH 9.9, source 42.5°C, ~280 L/min, colorless and transparent with hydrogen-sulfide smell, total dissolved ~210 mg/kg; a slippery/viscous (nuru-nuru/toro-toro) skin feel is reported by at least 8 distinct reviewers, and a noticeable sulfur smell by at least 5.
stated by 10 visitors · Jul 2025 – Jul 2026
Towels, soap & lockers
Body soap and rinse-in shampoo are provided (4 distinct reviewers; one identifies Futaba Chemical aloe soap, while another complains the shampoo left hair creaky); hair dryers are available per 3 reviewers (one confirming free use). You receive an assigned locker key at reception and return it on leaving (4 reviewers); large rucksacks do not fit and must be left outside the bathroom (one reviewer), and one reviewer reports entry was being restricted because lockers had run out; note there is no toilet in the changing room (one reviewer).

Outdoor bath & sauna
There is one indoor bath and one semi-open-air rotenburo (at least 5 distinct reviewers; two specifically call it 'half-outdoor'); each tub fits only about 5-6 adults per one reviewer, and no reviewer mentions a sauna. One summer bather was swarmed by horseflies in the rotenburo, and another notes the men's rotenburo gets direct sunlight.

Staffing
Staffed reception inside the TEPCO-affiliated Oze Purari-kan nature center (operator noted by 3 reviewers): one reviewer found the staff kind, while another describes a sullen receptionist along with moldy washing areas and waterlogged lockers on their visit (cleanliness otherwise called well-managed by 2 reviewers).
stated by 6 visitors · Jul 2025 – Jul 2026
The water
Perceived bath temperature conflicts: one reviewer felt about 42°C with the rotenburo slightly hotter, but four others describe the water (especially the outdoor bath) as lukewarm or not very hot, including one autumn visitor who found the rotenburo cold.
